The data displays the results of a survey on the share of cash transactions at POS (points of sale) in selected countries in Europe as of 2016. Within Europe there is a lot of diversity when it comes to the use of payment methods. Every country has its own way of paying money, with credit/debit cards, checks, mobile apps, NFC (Near-Field Communication, or contactless payments) and digital wallets being the most well-known digital payments methods in Europe.
The large majority of payments in the euro area were made in shops, restaurants, petrol stations and street merchants, commonly referred to as POS or 'points of sale'.
