The data displays the development of global reinsurance capital from 2006 to 2016, by type. Alternative capital refers to capital from non-traditional sources, such as catastrophe bonds, pension funds, endowments, family offices, hedge funds and other private investors, rather than equity capital. In 2016, traditional reinsurance capital amounted to 514 billion USD worldwide, whereas alternative reinsurance capital amounted to 81 billion USD. However, the amount of alternative reinsurance capital has steadily risen since 2008.
