The data displays the share of individuals per chosen voluntary excess (in Dutch: vrijwillig eigen risico) under the Dutch Health Insurance Act (Zvw) from 2010 to 2017. In 2018, approx. 74% of Dutch people aged 18 years and older who picked a voluntary excess decided to increase it with 500 euros.
Since 2008, it is compulsory from the age of 18 to pay a total mandatory excess before the basic health insurance reimburses medical costs. In this way, everybody contributes to certain types of healthcare such as maternity care.
