The data describes the infant mortality rate in the USA as of 2017, measured in deaths per 1,000 live births. As of that year, the infant mortality rate in Mississippi amounted to almost nine per one thousand live births before the age of one year, the highest rate of any state. Around two thirds of infant deaths in the United States occur in the neonatal period which lasts from birth to the first 27 days of life. Lack of access to health care, poor maternal health, and prenatal and postnatal care all contribute to infant mortality.
