Number of independent bookstores in the United States 2009-2017

The data displays the number of independent bookstores in the U.S. from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, there were 1,757 independent bookselling companies running 2,321 stores. During a recent survey in the U.S., 20% of respondents stated that they still purchase most of their print books in store, in comparison to 22% who stated that they mostly buy books online. In 2015, bookstore sales in the U.S. amounted to 11.01 billion USD, a decrease from over 15 billion USD in 2010.
