During that period, average annual salaries of employees in urban areas have grown from 20,856 to 67,569 yuan per year. Yet as of 2015, a large income gap still existed between coastal and western regions in China. While employees in Beijing had enjoyed the highest annual salary with about 111,390 yuan on average, Henan province in central China had displayed the lowest average annual salary with only about 45,403 yuan per year.
