Number of higher education institutions in the United States from 1980-2015

The data displays the number of higher education institutions in the U.S. from 1980 to 2015. As can be seen in the graph, there were a total of 4,583 higher education institutions across the U.S. as of 2015. In 2016, there were 448 higher education institutions in California, the highest number of any U.S. state. New York had the second most higher education institutions with 304, followed by Texas and Pennsylvania.
