Apple’s iOS - additional information Prior to the launch of Apple’s iPhone in 2007, smartphones were a rather niche product and had not yet attained mass appeal. At the time, the most popular smartphone operating system was Symbian, with a 63% market share, largely due to its compatibility with Nokia products. In the ranking of OS market leaders, Symbian was followed by Microsoft Windows Mobile and RIM (Research in Motion), the operating system of Blackberry smartphones.
