The data depicts the number of smart meters deployed in the U.S. annually from 2008 to 2016. In 2016, 5.9 million smart meter units were added. Many smart meters were installed in 2010 and 2011 due to stimulus from funding given out in 2009 which was employed by many of the biggest utilities.
