The installed base of Android smartphones was 1.8 billion devices in September 2015 and rose to 2.7 billion by the end of 2017. As of the second quarter 2017 the Android OS accounted for about 88% of global smartphone shipments worldwide. As of September 2017, the most popular Android operating system was the Marshmallow (6.0), followed by the Lollipop 5.1.
