The data shows the total pure installed hydropower capacity worldwide in 2017, by region. During this year, Russia had 48 gigawatts of installed hydropower capacity. China had both the highest level of installed capacity and the biggest number of new developments.

China accounted for a large portion of the world’s total hydropower capacity, totaling 341 gigawatts as of 2017. In comparison, the U.S. accounted for 103 gigawatts and Canada accounted for just under 81 gigawatts.
