The data displays the total turnover of NFC payments in the Netherlands from the first quarter of 2016 to the first quarter of 2018 (in million euro). In the first quarter of 2018, approx. 6.6 billion euro worth of NFC (or near field communication) payments were made in the Netherlands using either debit cards or mobile phones.
NFC payments were introduced in the Netherlands in 2014 and mainly involves contactless payments made at points of sales, with either a debit card or a mobile phone or payments via QR codes. These methods are supported and developed by Dutch banks, such as ING and Rabobank, with larger Fintech-services such as Android Pay, Apple Pay and Pay from Samsung not yet being released in the Netherlands.
